The annual Golden Globe glitz that start the awards season in Hollywood is scrapped for this year. Golden Globe is just one of those affected by the writer’s strike that had started since November 5 of last year. The Writers Guild was not allowed by their members to work on the star-studded awards show. Instead of the glittering show, a news conference will take place to announce this year’s winners. Initially, the members of the guild had planned to form picket lines outside the news conference. However, they later cancelled their plans for the picket lines. But some of them continue to call for a boycott. The boycott of this year’s ceremony will leave a hard impact on the awards season. The Hollywood’s sparkle will be heavily affected since the Globes were considered as the cousin of Academy Awards, where stars can celebrate their achievements in television and in film. In line with this, the Oscar big night on February 24 looks uncertain as Patric Verrone, Guild leader, also announced that its union members will not be allowed to work on the Oscar awards show. But Oscar organizers stood firm that the grandest awards show will continue as originally planned even without the presence of Guild writers. Aside from the awards season, the writers’ strike had left many television series hanging and facing reruns since they don’t have any new episodes to tape without new scripts from Guild writers. The strike was prompted when Guild members had asked for their share of potential profits from the Internet and other source of media. |
