Dr. Gregory House is an infectious disease and nephrology specialist who manages the Department of Diagnostic Medicine at the Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital in New Jersey. Often devoid of bedside manner and unconventional treatments, House would not even talk to his patients. Later on, he impresses them with fast and accurate diagnoses. Always seen playing video games while colleagues or patients talk to him, he often solves medical puzzles in under a minute. Dr. House uses a cane because he was unable to diagnose his own infraction damaging his leg. The episodes usually feature the practice of entering a patient’s room even without permission in order to search for clues. The show is somewhat of a CSI-type TV program in which “germs were the suspects”. But later on, the plot moved towards the characters instead of the environment. Though officially based on a real-life diagnostician, House resembles Sherlock Homes in many respects. Both rely on finer details for accurate diagnoses. House is addicted to Vicodin while Holmes uses cocaine out of boredom. Both play musical instruments: House plays the piano while Holmes plays the violin. As a whole, House is an awesome show with fabulous characters. Two thumbs up! |
